Our CompanyLicofarma S.r.l. – Galatina (Lecce, Italy) is a private company that develops high technology innovation processes. It conducts research and development in the extraction of natural antioxidants with supercritical fluids. It is located in Galatina (Lecce, Italy) and has a plant of 20,000 m2 including production sites, R&D and QA laboratories, offices and green areas. In the last decade, the Company has been investing in biotechnology R&D, in particular in the extraction methods of natural antioxidants by sub and supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) instead of using chemical solvents.

Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction allows to obtain solvent-free natural products with the highest standards in terms of quality. Moreover, this technology is riskless for humans and environmentally-friendly.


Research activities were developed in collaboration with important research institutes, such as the Università del Salento (Department of Biological and Environmental Science and Technology – Di.S.Te.B.A. – Laboratories of Botany and Cellular Plant Biology; Department Innovation Engineering – Laboratory of General and Inorganic Chemistry) and  the CNR ISPA – Institutes of of Science and Food Production of Bari and Lecce. This technology allows to extract active principles from solid and liquid matrices and to separate several fraction from the extracts.

The developed processes are:

  • Extraction of lycopene from red-ripe tomatoes 2,6 (3 PATENTS).
  • Extraction of anthocyanins from red grapes and other red fruisS 4,5 (1 PATENT)
  • Extraction and concentration of vitamin E from almonds and other nuts3.
  • Extraction and fractionation of antioxidant and aromatic fractions from officinal plants (rosemary, sage).

Since 2007, the Company is involved in the industrial scale up of the developed research projects, in particular in the organic lycopene extraction process.

Organic lycopene can be promptly used as nutritional supplement for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis and some tyoes of cancer.
Together with its external partners, Pierre Srl carries out research activities in the development of products for the prevention of serious pathologies such as cardiovascular diseases.

Other important applications of organic lycopene are under investigation and concern the ophthalmological and cosmetic sectors.
